Why it’s the perfect time to become a Driving Instructor.

Driving Lesson Backlog Caused By Lockdowns.

The pandemic has caused a backlog in driving lessons. Think of all the people who were having lessons before the lockdowns who now want to start up again. And then add all the people that would have started lessons but couldn’t because we were in lockdowns for several months and you have a huge demand for driving tuition.

National Shortage Of Driving Instructors.

Since the pandemic started a lot of Driving Instructors have left the industry, either retiring or moving on to other jobs. Now is the perfect time to become a Driving Instructor because the combination of a national shortage of Instructors and a spike in demand for lessons means you’ll have no problem keeping your diary full of fee-paying pupils.

We help people become qualified Driving Instructors all over the UK.

To start the process to becoming a Driving Instructor, you must satisfy the following conditions:

  • You must be at least 21 years old.

  • You must have held a Driving Licence for 2.5 years.

  • You must have less than 6 points on your Driving Licence.

  • You must be able to read a licence plate at 27.5 meters (90 feet).

  • You must undergo a criminal records check.

Step 1

Apply for a Criminal Records Check

To become a Driving Instructor, you must have a ‘criminal records’ check to obtain a DBS Number.

Step 2

Register as a PDI (Potential Driving Instructor)

Once you have received your CRB Disclosure Number, you may now register as a PDI (Potential Driving Instructor) and receive your Personal Reference Number (PRN) which you will need to book your tests.

You must now register as a PDI within 6 months or your CRB will expire.

Step 3

ADI Training Part One - Theory/Hazard Perception

The test is split into 2 parts with the first focusing on your knowledge of the Highway Code, general road safety, driving techniques, basic first aid knowledge and the theory of teaching a pupil. The second, known as ‘hazard perception’, features a series of video clips during which you will have to identify any potential hazards.

Step 4

ADI Training Part Two - Driving Ability

This is an advanced practical driving test. As an ADI your standard of driving will be expected to be higher than normal and test is designed to ensure you will meet the required standard. Once you pass your Part 2 you may apply for a trainee licence and learn on the job, teaching real pupils and earning real money in the process

Step 5

ADI Training Part Three - Instructional Ability

This final stage ensures you have the correct level of instructional ability to pass on driving skills to pupils. The examiner’s role is to watch you conduct a client-centred driving lesson to one of your pupils, with the lesson lasting about one hour. Your pupil can either be a genuine learner driver or it can be a full licence holder. You can also take your trainer or mentor along with you. But, the DVSA do not allow them to take part in the lesson.
